When: Friday, May 16, 2008 7:00 PM Location: Vroman's Bookstore Description: Vlautin, author of the acclaimed debut novel The Motel Life and lead singer of the alt-country band Richmond Fontaine, returns to Vroman's to present his new novel, Northline. Set in the outskirts of Vegas and Reno, Northline follows Allison Johnson as she flees her violent skinhead boyfriend Jimmie, just as she's about to have his baby. Imagined conversations with her hero, Paul Newman, sustain her through her loneliest times until she meets Dan Mahoney, an outsider himself looking to move beyond his circumstances. Full of memorable characters and imbued with a beautiful sense of yearning, Vlautin's work has been praised by The Bookseller (London) as possessing “the tone of a Tom Waits song or Bukowski poem.” In addition to a reading, Vlautin will perform his music live as well!

Rock on: An Office Power Ballad
by
Kennedy, Dan
Ah, the glamorous life of a mid-level music executive: non-corner offices, awkward meetings between nerds and rock stars, and late night car service vouchers; not exactly the sex, drugs, and rock and roll you'd expect. With a McSweeney's sensibility and an awkward charm, Dan Kennedy tells all in his keenly observed, laugh out loud funny, insider's view of the music biz??told not from the top of the heap, but from middle management. He is hilarious!--Allison Hill, Vroman's Bookstore (Pasadena, CA) |
